EMTAK

The Estonian Classification of Economic Activities (EMTAK) is the national version of the internationally harmonized NACE classification. EMTAK has a hierarchical structure, being divided into five levels. The first four levels correspond to NACE, and the fifth level is national, reflecting the specifics of the Estonian economy and relevant legislation.

EMTAK serves as the basis for determining activities, which in turn is an important source for producing various sectoral statistics. It also allows for international comparability within the respective field.

When starting a business, only one primary activity should be selected, which is the activity expected to generate the most revenue in the first financial year. Designating the primary activity does not mean that the company cannot operate in other areas as well.

Activities are classified similarly in all European Union member states.
